Clive was an orphaned child, and spent her early years in several different foster homes. In public school and college she pursued sports playing baseball and varsity volleyball. Clive's career in bodybuilding began in 1983. She began training with Don Ross at the Olympia Health Club in Oakland, California, where she told him, "I want to be the Arnold Schwarzenegger of female bodybuilding." Clive also quickly began a career in acting during the mid 1980s beginning with her role in John Candy's Armed and Dangerous (1986).
